Thursday’s Reflection0

I can’t believe how fast this week has gone.  I have learned so much – I hope I remember it all until school starts.  I am very excited about including some of the things I learned into my lesson plans for this coming school year.  I am definitely going to use the golden lines/found poem exercise by having my students write to a work of art.  I tried having them do that last year without the golden lines and the results were much worse than I expected.  I got things like “The man is wearing blue.  He is also wearing shoes.  A horse is by his side.  They are going for a ride.”  I was hoping for more interesting commentary on the paintings.  I think that giving them a starting point by using the golden lines will help show them the quality of work that I am expecting.

I would also like to use movie maker to create other movies about artists.  I may even have the kids each do a movie about an artist as a research project.  I think they would enjoy that more than just writing a report about the artist.  I could burn a CD for each student with all the reports on it.

Misty Blue,  I hope you will be teaching another tech. class next summer!

Triadic Writing0

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine…

The sun is very hot and will burn your skin after prolonged exposure.

I got severely sunburned on a trip to Virginia Beach during Senior Week.  We were celebrating the fact that we had just graduated from high school and we now knew everything! – well, except how to put on sunscreen!

Today’s Reflection1

I’m not sure if I am doing everything the way it needs to be done.  I think my “How I Got Here” might be too short.  I made my movie as something I would use in my classroom, but it doesn’t involve creative writing – although I did do the research and write the biographical information about the artist.  I am starting to get a little confused about all the assignments because I am such a visual person – I need to have a list with all the requirements and check them off as I complete them.  It’s 12:30, off to the poster machine…

Reflection – What I Learned Today0

Wow!  We have had a busy morning.  In addition to learning about how to use digital photography in the classroom, I also got a great refresher course in using Movie Maker.  I was afraid that I wouldn’t retain much of what I learned about it last summer, but it all seemed to come back during this morning’s presentation.  I am very excited to start working on my afternoon projects…

I wanted to encorporate Movie Maker into my classroom last year, but just wasn’t able to do it because of conflicting schedules with the tech teacher.  This year, I would like to have some time scheduled when I can take my students into the computer lab and have them work during my class time.   I think the 4th grade teacher and I will try to have her class create a movie about an artist that they have researched.  I can’t wait!

Real Name Poem2

If I were Roxie
I would be intoxicating,
outgoing,
the life of the party,
the star.

If I were Callie
I would be smooth and smoky,
intriguing,
unattainable.

If I were Mary
I would be soft and gentle,
a mothering flower,
a comforter.

But I wish for things I am not.

I am a whispering thistle,
shy and defensive,
until you discover my inner beauty.
I am Jennifer.

Reflection – To Blog or Not to Blog?1

I think that blogging can be beneficial to students if they are trained in how to use the blogs properly.  It would be very easy for students to begin by talking about who is dating who or what happened on some TV show.  It would take instruction to show the students the deeper level of thought that can be brought out by discussing important topics rather than just everyday stuff.  This might be more difficult on a closed blog where everyone involved is in the same class at school.  I could see how they would want to use it as a social outlet rather than a learning tool – especially if the class is very talkative.

A teacher would have to have the time to strictly monitor all posts to make sure that the conversation stayed on track.  I personally don’t have much free time to spend doing that.  How do we as teachers find the time to incorporate blogging into our classes?
